As the highlight of the recently-released Mitchell Report, there is no doubt that Roger Clemens has been under the eyes of baseball enthusiasts. While his accuser, Brian McNamee, and his long-time friend and teammate, Andy Pettitte, have essentially disagreed on the whole idea surrounding his use of steroids, Clemens has held firm on his statement that he never consumed performance-enhancing substances. No doubt disheartening news for Boston Red Sox fans, it appears that Curt Schilling will most likely be unable to pitch for a large portion of the 2008 season due to a shoulder injury. According to his specialist, Dr. Craig Morgan, surgery is the only way to repair the injury so that Schilling is able to pitch again.
“I think his chance of coming back to pitching with rehab or a conservative approach is zero,” Dr. Craig Morgan said on Friday. “He might not come back after surgery, either. However, if the surgery is successful, he should be fully rehabbed by about All-Star break.” Read the rest of this entry »

Undoubtedly the most popular name listed on the Mitchell Report, Rogers Clemens spoke Tuesday for 5 hours with Congress in hopes of pursuing his denial that he has not used steroids. The seven-time Cy Young award winner gave a sworn deposition that he has never consumed steroids despite being included in the report by Senator George Mitchell. Clemens also stated that he is glad that the government has patiently listened to what he has to say. Read the rest of this entry »

While many trades and acquisitions have taken place this off-season, two names appear to have remained on the winter bubble: Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts.
This week, talks have heated up involving a trade that would send Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners for a package of players that would include prospects Adam Jones, George Sherrill, and Chris Tillman. Bedard has been a hot commodity all winter after going 13-5 while striking out 221 hitters last season. Reports have indicated that the asking price for Bedard has been outrageous and that Baltimore Orioles representatives, including Andy MacPhail, are extremely hesitant to let Bedard go. At just 28, the Orioles organization believes that there is extreme potential in this upcoming superstar, who is eligible for salary arbitration later next month. Read the rest of this entry »

The biggest name on the trading block, Johan Santana, has reached a preliminary deal with the New York Mets to pitch at Shea Stadium. When it seemed that a deal with the Boston Red Sox was on the horizon, the Mets stepped in and countered with an offer that included prospects Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey, and Phil Humber. The deal is pending a physical and a contract extension. Santana is owed $13.25 million next season, and his contract extension is said to reach anywhere from $100-$150 million.
Experts believe that the acquisition of Johan Santana gives the New York Mets the edge in the National League. With a rotation already consisting of John Maine, Orlando Hernandez, and Oliver Perez, it will be difficult for any teams to compete with this staff. Pedro Martinez is also expected to be fully recovered from his injury, and there is no telling what type of impact he will have if healthy. Santana should put up stronger numbers in the National League given that the American League Central has been one of the toughest divisions in all of baseball. Not to mention that he will be backed by an offense that includes Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright. Read the rest of this entry »

The Chicago Cubs have suffered a terrible loss: their bench will no longer be warm.
Mark Prior has reportedly agreed to a 1-year deal with the San Diego Padres that is full of incentives that could eventually equal a total of roughly $6 million. The deal did not come as a surprise, as Prior’s hometown is located in California.
Mark Prior did not pitch at all in 2007, as he underwent exploratory surgery in April to repair his right shoulder. Though the Chicago Cubs did supposedly offer him a contract, Prior was looking for a short-term deal so that he can hit it big in the free agent market if he has an explosive 2008 season. While a number of teams have made significant moves this off-season to strengthen their ball club, some have sat in the shadows watching it all go down. Unquestionably, the 2008 season should provide for some very interesting surprises. Here is a look at the teams to watch for in 2008 based on the moves they made this winter:
Detroit Tigers
It is quite obvious that the Detroit Tigers meant nothing but business this winter. After acquiring Edgar Renteria earlier in the off-season, it became evident that they were anxious to fill their necessary holes. They then went out and traded for the slugging Jacque Jones, who should definitely provide some pop to the already-stacked Detroit Tigers lineup.
Then came the biggest blockbuster of them all. The Florida Marlins were clearly marketing superstars Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, and the Detroit Tigers jumped at the opportunity. They went out and picked up both Cabrera and Willis, but these fish weren’t easy to reel in: the Detroit Tigers gave up a handful of prospects, including P Andrew Miller, OF Cameron Maybin, C Mike Rabelo, P Dallas Trahern, P Eulogio De La Cruz and P Burke Badenhop.
What will 2008 bring for the Detroit Tigers? By the looks of their competition in the American League Central, a division title is definitely a possibility. One thing is for sure: Jim Leyland and the Detroit Tigers will be a new team on opening day. Read the rest of this entry »

Now that the all of the off-season transactions are almost complete, the 2008 season is beginning to shape up. However, one question remains: Just where will Johan Santana be pitching on opening day?
Right now, it appears that there are three teams involved in the Santana sweepstakes: the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and, of course, the Minnesota Twins.
According to several reports, a deal was all but complete earlier this month during the winter meetings that would have moved Johan Santana to the Boston Red Sox. It appeared that the asking price of the Minnesota Twins was remarkably high, which prevented any sort of transaction from taking place. The Twins supposedly want Red Sox prospect Jacoby Ellsbury sent in a package of upcoming talent, but the Red Sox have been reluctant to give up their young superstar. Read the rest of this entry »

With all of the hype surrounding the Mitchell Report that was released to the general public more than a week ago, new rumors are circulating that former Senator George Mitchell may have yet another 400-page booklet of nonsense up his sleeve.
“Now that we have clarified the issue regarding steroids in baseball, I feel that it is time to bring attention to another issue in the league that has been bothering me,” stated the former senator.
According to numerous reporters, several major league athletes have been abusing penis-enlargement pills, a practice that has been considered unlawful.
“Now that I am getting old, it is starting to look more shriveled in the locker room. I need to keep up with the youth of the organization,” quoted Yankee superstar Andy Pettitte.
Senator George Mitchell claims to have more than 15 names in his detailed report regarding penis enlargement pills in baseball, which is expected to be released sometime next week. Among the names expected to be included are Andy Pettitte, Eric Gagne, and seven-time Cy Young award Roger Clemens.
“This study was done to hopefully limit the general use and abuse of penis-enlargement substances baseball. Ultimately, we hope to eliminate the drug from the game, as it obviously affects several players’ performance. From this point on, we will be conducting random penis measurement testing every three months to ensure that each player is abiding by our league policy,” quoted MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.
